LOCAL HISTORY

The town of Rural Retreat, Virginia incorporated in 1911, has a colorful and rich history built around the railroad that bisects the downtown and gave birth to the community.

From the 1760's through early 19th century, western Wythe County and the vicinity of current day Rural Retreat attracted German immigrants from Pennsylvannia. With the railroad in 1855, a community settled into what is now Rural Retreat. Once known as Mt. Airy, it is the highest point on the Norfolk & Western rail line.

Rural Retreat has an average high temperature of 74 degrees, is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and is 2500 feet above sea level.
